Gerhard Rühm

Mitte der 50er Jahre war RÜHM Mitbegründer der “Wiener Gruppe” (1954-60). Die radikalen Sprachexperimente der Gruppe zählen zu den wichtigsten literarischen Entwicklungen der Nachkriegszeit. Von Anfang an suchte RÜHM mit Hilfe verschiedener Medien nach neuen künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen. RÜHMs Werk basiert auf der Umsetzung eines absolut interdisziplinären Kunstbegriffs, der zwischen bildender Kunst (visuelle Poesie, gestische Zeichnung, Fotomontage, Objekte) und Musik (auditive Poesie, dokumentarische Melodramen und Text-Ton-Transformationen) oszilliert. Von 1972 bis 1995 Lehrtätigkeit an der Hamburger Hochschule für bildende Künste.
Seit Anfang der 50er Jahre war Gerhard RÜHM intermedial orientiert und immer auf der Suche nach neuen und unverbrauchten Formen künstlerischen Ausdrucks. Die grafische Gestaltung resultierte aus der konkreten Poesie, Gedichte wurden Chansons, Musik wiederum grafisch lesbar. In der Tradition der Wortkunst des Barock/Expressionismus/Dada stehend, entwickelte er Dichtung vor allem in Grenzbereichen weiter, sowohl hin zur bildenden Kunst (visuelle Poesie, gestische und konzeptionelle Zeichnungen, Fotomontagen, Buchobjekte) als auch zur Musik (auditive Poesie als Sprech-und Tonbandtexte, Chansons, dokumentarische Melodramen, Vokalensembles, konzeptionelle Klavierstücke wie Text-Ton-Transformationen).
In the mid-1950s, RÜHM was a co-founder of the “Wiener Gruppe” (1954-60). The group’s radical language experiments are among the most important literary developments of the postwar era. From the very beginning, RÜHM has employed the use of various media in an effort to search new forms of artistic expression. RÜHM’s work is based on the implementation of an absolutely interdisciplinary concept of the arts, oscillating between fine arts (visual poetry, gestural drawing, photomontage, objects) and music (auditive poetry, documentative melodramas and text-sound transformations).
Since the beginning of the 1950s, Gerhard RÜHM was intermedially oriented and always in search of new and fresh forms of artistic expression. The graphic design resulted from concrete poetry, poems became chansons, music in turn became graphically legible. Standing in the tradition of the word art of Baroque/Expressionism/Dada, he developed poetry further, especially in border areas, both towards the visual arts (visual poetry, gestural and conceptual drawings, photomontages, book objects) and towards music (auditory poetry as spoken and taped texts, chansons, documentary melodramas, vocal ensembles, conceptual piano pieces such as text-sound transformations).
