Biography

Ovidiu ANTON was born in 1982 in Timișoara, Romania; he lives and works in Vienna. From 2003 to 2004, he attended the School for Artistic Photography by Friedl Kubelka (Vienna). This was followed by studies in Performative Arts and Sculpture under Monica Bonvicini at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and at the École supérieure des beaux-arts in Marseille.

The aesthetic of Ovidiu ANTON employs the stylistic device of paradoxical intervention. His practice resonates with youth subcultural forms of expression such as graffiti, stencil art, or street art, yet it subverts their methods and intentions. Ovidiu ANTON also intervenes in public space, where he combines artistic-political practices with critical analysis and activist engagement.

Ovidiu ANTON’s work has been shown internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at the Museum on the Seam / Sociopolitical Contemporary Art Museum (Jerusalem), AK Arbeiterkammer (Vienna), Galerie 5020 (Salzburg), Neue Galerie Graz, Bruseum (Graz), Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein (Vaduz), Anca Poterasu Gallery (Bucharest), MAK Center for Art and Architecture (Los Angeles), DonauArt (Linz), Jüdisches Museum Hohenems, Jüdisches Museum München, AIL Angewandte Innovation Laboratory (Vienna), City Art Museum Ljubljana (Ljubljana), Austrian Cultural Forum Warsaw, Kunsthalle Wien, GrazMuseum, WUK (Vienna), Mumok (Vienna), MAK Forum (Vienna), Forum Stadtpark (Graz), Traklhaus (Salzburg), Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris), and Kunstraum Niederösterreich (Vienna), as well as at festivals such as the European Capital of Culture Salzkammergut 2024 (Bad Ischl), Vienna Biennale at the MAK – Museum für Angewandte Kunst (Vienna), Off-Biennale Budapest, and Steirischer Herbst, rotor Center for Contemporary Art (Graz).

His works part of collections such as AK Arbeiterkammer (Vienna), BKA Bundeskanzleramt Collection (Vienna), Belvedere (Vienna), MAK – Museum of Applied Arts (Vienna), MUSA – Museum Startgalerie Artothek (Vienna), Pittel + Brausewetter GmbH, Universalmuseum Joanneum (Graz), and Wien Museum.
