AI WEIWEI nahm außerdem an bedeutenden internationalen Biennalen teil, darunter Biennale von Venedig, Yokohama Triennale, Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, Liverpool Biennial, documenta 12 (Kassel), 5th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (Queensland), 15th Biennale of Sydney, Guangzhou Triennale sowie 1st Montpellier Biennale of Chinese Contemporary Art.
Seine Werke befinden sich in bedeutenden internationalen Sammlungen, darunter Centre Pompidou (Paris), CIFO – Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (Miami), Guggenheim Museum (New York), Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington), Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Humlebæk), Moderna Museet (Stockholm), Museum Dahlem (Berlin), Museum DKM (Duisburg), Museum für Asiatische Kunst (Berlin), Museum of Contemporary Art (San Diego), Queensland Art Gallery (Brisbane), Rubell Family Collection (Miami), Sigg Collection (Luzern), Tate (London) sowie Walther Collection (Neu-Ulm).

AI WEIWEI was born in Beijing in 1957. Since leaving China in 2015, he has lived in European exile. Following periods in Berlin and Cambridge (United Kingdom), the artist and outspoken critic of the Chinese regime has settled primarily in Portugal.
Both publicly and through his frequently censored blogs, AI WEIWEI advocates freedom of the press and respect for human rights, seeking to contribute to the development of a genuine civil society and democratic system. A prerequisite for this would be the assumption of personal responsibility – something that remains difficult in China due to the enduring influence of Confucian thought. The government under Hu Jintao even employed the concept of harmony as an ideological guiding principle and instrument of political control. For centuries, people in China have been accustomed to following different paths (Tao) simultaneously, without passing judgement or committing to a particular position. AI WEIWEI therefore sees his responsibility as an artist in the relentless exposure and investigation of social injustices, as well as the dissemination of information about them.
AI WEIWEI’s works have been presented in numerous solo exhibitions, including MUSAC Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, Albertina modern (Vienna), Belvedere (Vienna), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), Gardiner Museum (Toronto), Fundación Proa (Buenos Aires), Whitechapel Gallery (London), Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Copenhagen), National Gallery (Prague), National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne), Brooklyn Museum (New York), Martin-Gropius-Bau (Berlin), Hirshhorn Museum (Washington, D.C.), Kunsthaus Graz, Kunsthaus Bregenz, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Tate Modern (London), Haus der Kunst (Munich), and Mori Art Museum (Tokyo).
In addition, he has realised numerous architectural projects in collaboration with Herzog & de Meuron, as well as a wide range of film projects. AI WEIWEI has also participated in major international biennials, including Venice Biennale, Yokohama Triennale, Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, Liverpool Biennial, documenta 12 (Kassel), 5th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (Queensland), 15th Biennale of Sydney, Guangzhou Triennale, and 1st Montpellier Biennale of Chinese Contemporary Art.
His works are held in major international collections, including Centre Pompidou (Paris), CIFO – Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (Miami), Guggenheim Museum (New York), Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington, D.C.), Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Humlebæk), Moderna Museet (Stockholm), Museum Dahlem (Berlin), Museum DKM (Duisburg), Museum für Asiatische Kunst (Berlin), Museum of Contemporary Art (San Diego), Queensland Art Gallery (Brisbane), Rubell Family Collection (Miami), Sigg Collection (Lucerne), Tate (London), and Walther Collection (Neu-Ulm).
