Für seine erste Einzelausstellung in Österreich ersuchte ihn die Galerie um dokumentarische Foto- und Videoarbeiten, welche die rasanten Veränderungen in China anhand seiner ganz persönlichen Beobachtungen und Erlebnisse mit der Regierung skizziert. Ai Weiwei fordert öffentlich und in seinen zahlreichen, immer wieder gesperrten Blogs, Pressefreiheit und die Wahrung der Menschenrechte, um eine echte Zivilgesellschaft, eine demokratische Gesellschaft, aufbauen zu helfen. Voraussetzung dafür wäre, dass die Menschen Verantwortung übernehmen, was in China durch die mächtige Tradition des konfuzianischen Denkens noch immer verhindert wird. Die gegenwärtige Regierung unter Hu Jintao benutzt den Begriff der Harmonie sogar als ideologisches Leitmotiv und Steuerungsinstrument. Denn seit Jahrhunderten sind die Chinesen darin geübt, vielfältige Wege (tao) gleichzeitig zu gehen, ohne zu werten oder zu wählen. Seine Verantwortung als Künstler sieht Ai Weiwei daher in der Rolle des unermüdlichen Aufzeigens und Recherchierens von Missständen und der Verbreitung von Information darüber.

The Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is one of the most compelling contemporary artists of our time. For his first solo exhibition in Austria, the gallery invited him to present documentary photo and video works that outline the rapid changes in China based on his personal observations and experiences with the government.
AI WEIWEIpublicly advocates for freedom of the press and the protection of human rights, both in his numerous blogs—which are frequently censored—and through his artistic practice, aiming to help build a true civil society, a democratic society. According to him, such a society can only emerge if individuals take responsibility—something that, in China, is still hindered by the powerful tradition of Confucian thought. The current government under Hu Jintao even uses the concept of harmony as an ideological guiding principle and control mechanism. For centuries, the Chinese have been trained to follow multiple paths (tao) simultaneously, without judgment or choice.
