Skip Arnold wurde 1957 in New York geboren, lebt aber bereits seit langem in Frankreich. Seine innovativen Performances, Filme und Installationen schließen an jenen Strang der Performance-Kunst an, der die Politik des Körpers analytisch thematisiert. Der Körper wird dabei nicht nur als politisierte, kulturell geprägte Entität aufgefasst, sondern auch unter humanitärem und ontologischem Blickwinkel auf seine Kraft, Ausdauer, seine Seinsweise und Präsenz hin untersucht.
Skip Arnolds Kunst beinhaltet Elemente von Dada, Fluxus und des Wiener Aktionismus. Man könnte sagen, er schließt wie kein anderer an diese Bewegungen an. Die Arbeiten entstehen durch sein großes und detailliertes Wissen der Sozial-, Politik- und Kunstgeschichte. Und es gelingt ihm, seine Ideen zu Sexualität, Politik und Geschichte poetisch so zu verdichten, dass sie beinahe wie Haikus anmuten.
Born in New York in 1957, but a long-time resident of France, Skip Arnold has maintained a transgressive practice of performance, film and installation art. His work finds its foundations in the historical canons of performance that address and dissect the body politic – confronting the body as politicized, enculturated but also addressing the body through the lens of humanitarian and ontological inquiries pertaining to strength, endurance, existence and presence.
Skip Arnold´s historical work could be said to have elements of Fluxus, dada, viennese actionism. It could also be said that he continues a practice that is, by now, unparalleled by any other contemporary performer. His extensive and acute knowledge of history – social, political and artistic – informs his work constantly, and he is able to reduce his ideas and knowledge, in almost haiku-like efficiency and poeticism – to address sexuality; social politics; narrative; autobiography.
