Al Hansen was a pioneer of FLUXUS along with Dieter Roth, John Cage, Alison Knowles, Joseph Beuys, Christo, Allen Kaprow, Yoko Ono, George Macunias and many more.
It is a long, intense history that connects Al Hansen’s oeuvre with the Venus of Willendorf. He created hundreds of variations of the contours of this female body that he interpreted as an archetypical form and symbol of sexual liberation. At times he would use low-quality material such as cigarette butts, thereby expelling anything sacral and any exalting aura from the works. This use of precarious materials can in a certain sense be read as a ‘side letter’ to his idea of art as a dispositif of destruction. (quot. Thomas Miessgang)
