Third Room: MIRCEA STANESCU | Apartament

The Rumanian artist Mircea Stanescu has never had a studio. Thus his apartment soon became his workplace, the center of his artistic energies. The rooms and the balcony with rosemary, peppermint, lavender and two worktables, the front hall with the remains of installations, and the bed surrounded by books were and are residual spaces and settings that shape production. In their dual function they are also a theme of Stanescu’s work.

Since 2008 he has documented the constants and variables of the space in which he lives and works in a series of photographs: the mutability of material taking form in everyday life, subtle transformations in the arrangement of objects and furniture, an attempt to capture the imperceptible passage of time objectively. Stanescu’s photographic work is documentation and mythical hypostatization, the unveiling of a productive scenario. And yet it does not betray the secret of what is hidden behind the surfaces of these banal objects. It is a meditation on space and time, capturing uncanny aspects of the artist’s home as the manifestation of a transcendental homelessness, while at the same time giving material contours to that which is transient and unsayable.
