Barbara Eichhorn was born in Freising (Germany) in 1965, she lives and works in Vienna. 1988-1995 studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. Her drawings were shown several times at group-exhibitions in the gallery. Since 1999 she is represented at the artist´s program of the New York Drawing Center. She will participate at Peter Pakesch´s show Abbild in Graz (Steirischer Herbst) 2001 and at Laura Heon´s The New Danube at MASS MoCA, USA 2002. Her works are in the collections a.o. of the Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna; Leopold Museum, Vienna; Neue Galerie, Graz; Deutsche Bank, Frankfurt; Bank Austria, Vienna.
“In my portraits as well as in my landscapes I draw what I have immediately in front of my eyes, everything that is associated with my personal milieu. I search for the intimate element and show it without allowing the works to become private.
My large-format drawings are chosen instants of life. They establish no relations to a larger context; they do not transfer any particular messages. I try to show things in their simplicity and directness, to reduce them to their essentials and to get to the heart of their essence. The drawings are rather calm and unspectacular.
In principle, I use my own or found photos as a pattern and so they function as a sketchbook for me. The choice of motives is subjective.
In the series of the “boy’s drawings” I am really concerned to show the boy in his sensitivity, naivety, and maybe also in his cruelty on the verge of turning from a child into a young man. In this conflict of adolescence, I wanted to make perceptible the physical discomfort of the child who does not know where it belongs to. The drawings are wooden, faces like masques; the arms are too short and the bodies are out of proportion. The sexual aspect is not the foreground, it is moreover the physical experience, the fact “to put myself” in this body’s position.The process of maturing, of growing up is of great interest for me. The continual change of the child but also of the people who surround it (father, mother, grandparents, friends, relatives) is the main subject of the latest father-and-child / mother-and-child drawings. My main concern is to understand everyone in his/her role but also in his/her individuality outside of this role and after all to reach a common validity.” (Barbara Eichhorn, July 2001)
