The exhibition follows the story of a couple in an unhappy marriage. The man is neglectful and domineering, tormenting his wife and his little daughter. Tired of this tumultuous relationship, the wife picks up her daughter and flees to the nearby forest. She begins to dissociate and sees her many misshapen wombs scattered all over the ground as the stages of her life during their marriage. The man, unable to let go, sends wild animals after her to prove his power and full possession of her.
“The Forest Song” is an escape fantasy of a woman, unable to leave the toxic relationship, which further has an impact on her child in later years. The relationship reinforces the heavy emotional baggage on the woman’s psyche that has been affected to the point of dissociation and losing oneself. The child, therefore, is a passive observer and a subject of her father’s wrath and jealousy. It is a tale of the lost love and desires, as well as dysfunctional attachment styles.
We can see the only figure positioned on the tree stump – Mavka – who is the daughter of the couple, lonely observing her mother’s spiky wombs which could not have carried another child. She is left alone among her fractured mother’s body, grieving for the family she wishes she could have had. The wreaths on the wall are the symbols of longing and the loss of beauty, overgrown by black foliage.
