„It might even seem as though Karin Kneffel is turning her attention in her new paintings, away from an identifiable natural reality and toward calculatedly fictional interiors, as if her realistic painting was taking a turn toward the surreal in order to discover rooms in which disparate fragments can co-exist. In fact the most recent paintings seem to be heightening the subversive potential of the cool detachment of her view of the appearance of the sumptuous co-existence of still life and ornament. Both of these have long proved to be rich sources of suggestion for the eternally beautiful in painting, on the borderline to consciously experienced decadence. Both of them succeed – in the interaction between objects of everyday use and decoration – in occasionally producing the most beautiful and unusual “blossoms”. Hence, a dog with elegant black and white markings sprints across the shimmering parallels of a classic parquet floor on which –subjected to the viewer’s full attention – a luxurious carpet displays its vibrant vegetal ornamentation. At the back of the room, casters under black furniture “legs” indicate the presence of a grand piano. Everything is very precise, beautiful and – in the way that it presents itself – the product of a very refined breed of painting – as something strange and distant.“
Annelie Pohlen, 2005
